Oklahoma Car Loan Laws

Oklahoma limits what a dealer contract can charge through its consumer credit code, taxes vehicles with an excise tax, and lets a lender repossess after any default.

In short

Oklahoma treats a dealer-arranged car contract as a consumer credit sale. On a typical car balance the finance charge may not exceed 21% a year; tiered rates allow more only on small balances. You pay a 3.25% excise tax plus a 1.25% sales tax when you title the car. State law gives no right to cure before repossession, but a seller cannot collect a deficiency on a sale with a cash price of $6,800 or less. The Oklahoma Department of Consumer Credit oversees consumer credit sellers and lenders.

What a dealer contract may charge in Oklahoma

When a dealer sells you a car on credit, the deal is a consumer credit sale under Title 14A, the Oklahoma Uniform Consumer Credit Code. Section 2-201 caps the credit service charge on that retail installment contract. The seller may use whichever of two limits gives the larger charge.

TieredUp to $2,04030%
Tiered$2,040.01 to $6,80021%
TieredOver $6,80015%
Flat alternativeWhole unpaid balance21%

On a balance of several thousand dollars, the flat 21% figure is the higher one, so 21% a year works as the practical ceiling on most car contracts. The tiered method can come out higher only on small balances. The Department of Consumer Credit adjusts the dollar brackets each July 1; the 2026 figures replaced brackets of $1,980 and $6,600. A ceiling is not a typical rate. Try your own numbers in the car payment calculator before you sign.

Taxes and fees when you buy a car in Oklahoma

  • Excise tax. Oklahoma charges a motor vehicle excise tax of 3.25% of the value of a new vehicle. On a used vehicle it is $20 on the first $1,500 of value plus 3.25% of the rest (68 O.S. §2103).
  • Sales tax portion. Vehicle sales also carry a 1.25% state sales tax. For that part, a trade-in counts: the tax applies to the difference between the trade-in value and the price of the car you buy (68 O.S. §1355).
  • No city or county sales tax. The same statute says vehicle sales are not subject to local sales and use taxes.
  • Documentary fee. We found no dollar limit on dealer doc fees in the Oklahoma statutes we checked. Ask for the fee in writing and compare it between dealers.

Falling behind on a car loan in Oklahoma

Oklahoma's consumer credit code does not require a lender to send a notice and wait before it repossesses. Your contract defines when you are in default, often after one missed payment. From that point the lender may take the car without a court order, using Oklahoma's version of Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code in Title 12A.

  1. Taking the car. A lender may repossess without going to court only if it does so without a breach of the peace (12A O.S. §1-9-609).
  2. Notice before sale. Article 9 requires the lender to tell you before it sells the car, so you know when and how the sale will happen.
  3. Getting the car back. Until the sale, you may redeem the car by paying what the law requires, which is usually the full balance plus costs.
  4. Small sales, no deficiency. If the cash price of the car was $6,800 or less, the seller that repossesses it cannot hold you liable for the unpaid balance (14A O.S. §5-103, amount in effect from July 1, 2026).

On larger contracts, a shortfall after the sale can still be collected. Our guides to repossession and the deficiency balance walk through each step. Members of the military on active duty have extra protection under the federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act.

Where to check a lender and complain

Questions people ask

What is the maximum interest rate on a car loan in Oklahoma?

For a dealer-arranged contract, the credit service charge may not exceed 21% a year on most car balances. Small balances may carry more under the tiered method: 30% on the first $2,040 and 21% on the part up to $6,800.

Do I have to be warned before my car is repossessed in Oklahoma?

No. Oklahoma law gives no right-to-cure notice before repossession. The lender must avoid a breach of the peace and must notify you before it sells the car. See what to do when you fall behind.

How much tax do I pay on a car in Oklahoma?

A 3.25% excise tax on a new vehicle's value (used vehicles pay $20 on the first $1,500, then 3.25%), plus a 1.25% sales tax. Local sales taxes do not apply to vehicle sales.

Can I owe money after repossession in Oklahoma?

Yes, if the sale does not cover your balance, unless the car's cash price was $6,800 or less. In that case the seller cannot collect a deficiency from you.
